Zuckerman was born in South Africa and received a degree in anatomy from the University of Cape Town in 1923. He carried with chacma baboons near Cape Town before moving to England in 1926. He studied medicine at University College London and qualified as a doctor in 1928.
He served as a research anatomists to the zoological society of London (1928-32), and was research associate at Yale University (1932 – 34) before moving to Oxford University as demonstrator and lecturer human anatomy.
By 1943 he had been elected to the Fellows of the Royal Society in recognition on his research on primate behavior and its physiological basis, especially the role of sex hormones.
During World War 2 he joined a team of Road Research Laboratory and acted as scientific adviser, initially investigating the effects of bomb explosions and conducting a survey of air raid casualties. He later concerned with planning air attacks. After the war he became a professor of anatomy at Birmingham University (1945 – 68) and in 1955, honorary secretary of the Zoological Society of London, which he sought to revitalize.
In 1977 he was appointed its president. Zuckerman served on numerous government committees, notably as chief scientific advisor to the ministry of defense (1960-66). He was chief scientific advisor t to the British government (1964-71) and wrote official reposts ion aspect of farming, natural resources, medicine and nuclear policy.
He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1943. His books include, A System of Anatomy (1961), Scientists and War (1966), and Nuclear reality and Illusion (1982).
Zukerman published his autobiography, From Apes to Warlords, in 1978.
