History of search engine

Hyperlinked text without any graphics did not attract scores of people to the internet. It wasn’t until the early 1990s when web browsers were invented that the internet and World Wide Web exploded in popularity.

The early development of search engines was largely centered in the United States. The first real search engine, didn’t come into being until 1993. Developed by Matthew Gray, it was call Wandex.

Wandex was the first program to both index and search the index of pages on the web. This technology was the first program to crawl the web and later became the basis for all search crawlers.

After that search engines took on a life of their own. From 1993 to 1998, the major search engines that the user probably familiar with toady were created.

*Excite – 1993

*Yahoo! – 1994
Initially was only providing a brows-able directory organizing web pages into categories which were classified by human editor. It has evolved into a full-fledged search engine by acquiring existing search engine technology in mid-2003.

*Web Crawler – Developed in 1993.
By 1994, WebCrawler had two commercial advertisers sponsoring the site and in the middle of 1995, it had been acquired by American Online as part of their effort to bridge to the web.

*Lycos – 1994

*Infoseek – started up in July 1994
In July 1998, Infoseek merged with Walt Disney’s Buren Vista Internet Group to form Go.com, which was abandoned in January 2001.

*AltaVista – 1995

*Ask Jeeves – 1997

It went to public in July 1999m and is one of the survivors in the search engine game.

The rise of the search engine coincided with the dot.com bubble, especially during the late 1990s, and large sums were invested in developing new and existing search engines and competing for a share of the search engine market.
